Wet Belts – Stanway

A wet belt is a timing belt that runs inside the engine, lubricated by engine oil, instead of behind a dry cover.

They’re used on several modern engines, including Ford’s 1.0 EcoBoost and the 1.2 PureTech fitted to many Peugeot, Citroën, and Vauxhall models. All Trans Autos inspect and replace wet belts, and we use the correct oil specification at every service to help them last.

Why wet belts need extra care

Running in oil makes a wet belt quieter and more efficient than a dry belt. The downside is that the belt can deteriorate if the oil isn’t right. The wrong oil specification, overdue oil changes, and lots of short journeys can all cause the belt material to soften and break down.

When that happens, small fragments of the belt can break away and circulate in the oil. These can block the strainer on the oil pump pickup, starving the engine of oil pressure. Left unchecked, the result can be serious engine damage.

Signs of a wet belt problem

Problems often develop quietly, but these are worth acting on straight away:

  • an oil pressure warning light, even briefly
  • an engine management light or a sudden drop in power
  • unusual noise from the engine
  • black debris visible on the dipstick or in the oil

If the oil pressure light comes on, stop as soon as it’s safe and don’t keep driving.

Why the right oil matters so much

Wet belt engines are designed around a very specific oil. Using a different grade or specification, even one that’s fine for other engines, can speed up belt wear. Keeping to the service interval is just as important, because old oil loses the properties that protect the belt.

When we service a wet belt engine, we always use oil that meets the manufacturer’s exact specification.

Inspection & replacement

On some engines, the belt can be inspected and measured without a full strip-down, which helps show whether replacement is due. We’ll carry out the check, share photos of what we find, and explain whether the belt can stay or needs replacing.

Replacing a wet belt is usually more involved than a standard cambelt job. Depending on the engine, it can mean removing more components, and we check the oil pickup strainer for debris while we’re there. The work finishes with fresh oil and a new filter.

Replacement intervals

Some manufacturers have shortened their recommended wet belt intervals since these engines first came out. We follow the latest guidance for your engine, so the interval in an older service book may not be the one that applies now.

Parts & guarantees

We fit belt kits of original equipment quality, or genuine parts where your engine needs them. Parts are covered by the manufacturer’s warranty, and our labour is guaranteed for 12 months.
