Class 7 MOT Testing – Stanway

Vans and other goods vehicles with a design gross weight between 3,000kg and 3,500kg need a Class 7 MOT. All Trans Autos carries out Class 7 tests in a bay that takes vehicles up to 5.5 tonnes, so larger vans can be tested, repaired, and back at work without a trip further afield.

Does your van need a Class 7 MOT?

The deciding factor is the design gross weight, sometimes called the gross vehicle weight. That’s the maximum the van is designed to weigh when fully loaded, and you’ll find it on the manufacturer’s plate, usually inside the driver’s door frame or under the bonnet. It’s also shown on your V5C logbook.

  • Up to 3,000kg: a Class 4 MOT
  • 3,001kg to 3,500kg: a Class 7 MOT
  • Over 3,500kg: an HGV test at a specialist testing station

Many large panel vans, such as long-wheelbase versions of the Ford Transit, Mercedes Sprinter, and Volkswagen Crafter, fall into Class 7. So do some pickups, tippers, and Luton vans. If you’re unsure, give us your registration and we’ll help you check.

Why not every garage can test your van

A Class 7 test needs a bay big enough for a large van, along with a brake tester and equipment rated for heavier axle weights. Plenty of MOT centres simply aren’t set up for it, which means van owners can be turned away or left waiting.

We’ve invested in a test bay and workshop ramps that take vehicles up to 5.5 tonnes, with a further ramp rated to 26 tonnes. That means we can carry out any repairs needed on the same premises.

What the test covers

The Class 7 MOT checks the same main areas as a car MOT, with a focus on the parts that work hardest on a loaded van:

  • brakes, tested to the standard required for a heavier vehicle
  • steering and suspension, including springs that may be sagging under regular loads
  • tyres, which must suit the van’s weight and be in good condition
  • lights, mirrors, and the windscreen
  • exhaust emissions
  • the body and chassis, checked for corrosion and damage

Clearing out the load area before the test helps, because the tester needs access to parts of the body and loose items can get in the way.

Fitting your MOT around your work

A van off the road can mean lost jobs, so we keep the process as quick and predictable as possible. You can book up to a month, minus a day, before your certificate expires and keep the same renewal date, which gives you room to plan around quieter days.

If anything fails, you’ll get a clear explanation, photos of the problem, and a quote. Repairs only go ahead once you’ve approved them. A courtesy van can be arranged to keep you working while yours is with us, although charges may apply.

For businesses running several vans, we can schedule MOTs alongside servicing, and we work with fleets managed through 1link as well as smaller businesses without a fleet account.
