Suspension
A knocking noise over speed bumps, a bouncy ride, or tyres wearing unevenly are all common signs of a suspension fault.
All Trans Autos diagnose and repair suspension problems on cars, vans, motorhomes, and commercial vehicles, replacing worn shock absorbers, springs, bushes, and joints so your vehicle handles safely again.
Your suspension keeps the tyres in firm contact with the road. As parts wear, the vehicle becomes less stable in corners, can take longer to stop, and gets through tyres faster. Suspension components are checked during the MOT too, and broken coil springs are one of the more common reasons for a failure.
This is often caused by worn drop links, anti-roll bar bushes, or a broken coil spring. Springs can snap with little warning, particularly on older vehicles or those that regularly cover rough roads.
If the vehicle keeps bouncing after going over a dip, the shock absorbers are probably worn. You might also notice the nose dipping sharply when you brake.
Worn ball joints, track rod ends, or bushes can make the steering feel imprecise, and the vehicle may wander on the motorway.
A broken spring is the most likely cause. Get it checked quickly, because the broken end of the spring can rub against and damage the tyre.
Wear on the inside or outside edge of a tyre usually points to an alignment problem, which worn suspension parts can cause.
Suspension noises are notoriously hard to pin down, since a knock from one corner can sound as though it’s coming from somewhere else entirely. We begin with a road test to hear the problem for ourselves, then lift the vehicle and check each component for play, leaks, and damage.
We’ll send you photos of anything we find and explain which parts are worn and which can wait. Where a component still has some life left, we’ll say so rather than replace it early.
Shock absorbers and springs are usually replaced in pairs on the same axle so the vehicle stays balanced. Some suspension work also affects wheel alignment, and we’ll let you know if yours needs checking afterwards.
Motorhomes and working vans put constant strain on their suspension, and sagging rear springs are a common result. Our ramps take vehicles up to 5.5 tonnes, and our larger ramp lifts up to 26 tonnes, so we can inspect and repair suspension on vehicles many local garages can’t accommodate.
Replacement components are of original equipment quality, with genuine parts used where the vehicle calls for them. You’re covered by the manufacturer’s warranty on parts and our 12-month guarantee on labour.
It depends on which component has worn and how much labour is involved. A drop link is a relatively small job, while a pair of shock absorbers takes longer. We’ll diagnose the fault and quote you before any work starts.
It isn’t advisable. A broken spring affects handling and can damage the tyre, so book the vehicle in as soon as possible.
It can. Broken springs, leaking shock absorbers, and excessive play in joints or bushes are all MOT failure points.
There’s no fixed lifespan, because road conditions and loads make a big difference. We check them during servicing, so wear is usually spotted before it becomes a problem.
